Head wrap holds a distinctive
position in the history of dress both for its longevity and for its potent
signification's.
It endured the travail of slavery and never
passed out of fashion. The head wrap represents far more than a piece of fabric
wound around the head.
The head wrap originated in
sub-Saharan Africa, and was often used to convey modesty, spirituality and
prosperity
.Head wrapping is literally a way
that African’s for centuries have been able to non-verbally communicate their
place in life. The head wrap of a woman walking down the street will tell you
if she’s a widow, a grandmother, or if she’s a married young woman. It’s an
element in the daily living of an African woman. Head wraps also serve a
practical function in protecting the head from the rays of the sun. In West
Africa, head wraps are referred to as ‘gele’ in Yoruba or ‘ichafu’ in Ibo.
The African American woman’s head
wrap has functioned as a “uniform of rebellion” signifying absolute resistance
to loss of self-definition.’
It is a symbol in Africa of one’s life and
social status; and in America of survival, courage, and cultural identity.
In todays Modern Society this head
wrap can be used to portray a statement
In any form or fashion, well
suited for all occasion. Easy to wrap and quick to go
Ps. Lets rock it with gratitude and show our
ancestors that in our day to day life’s we walk proudly wearing a taste of
their past with their phenomenal ability to overcome all challenges that
was placed in their way with quiet,
enduring dignity.
